How it works

01
Compute SHA-256 fingerprint

A cryptographic fingerprint of the exact artifact bytes is computed. This fingerprint uniquely identifies the artifact.

02
Create certificate record

A structured certificate is created containing the fingerprint, timestamp, issuer, and metadata.

03
Sign with Ed25519

The certificate payload is signed using CertifiedData's Ed25519 private key. The signature cannot be forged without the private key.

04
Publish for verification

CertifiedData's public key is available at the well-known registry. Any party can verify any certificate independently — no issuer contact required.

What the certificate proves

  • The artifact existed at the recorded timestamp in exactly this form
  • The artifact was submitted to CertifiedData for certification
  • The artifact's SHA-256 fingerprint is recorded and tamper-evident
  • The certificate was signed by CertifiedData's private key — independently verifiable using the published public key
  • Any subsequent modification to the artifact invalidates the certificate fingerprint

What AI artifact notarization means

To notarize an AI artifact is to create a tamper-evident record proving: this exact artifact, with this exact content, was submitted to this authority at this exact time, and the authority attests it meets the stated conditions.

For synthetic datasets, the condition attested is: this dataset was generated by a named algorithm and was not collected from real individuals. For AI artifacts generally, the condition is: this artifact has this exact content, has not been modified, and was certified by CertifiedData.

The certificate is the notarial act. The Ed25519 signature is the seal. The SHA-256 fingerprint is the binding to the artifact. Together they create a complete, independently verifiable proof of artifact provenance and integrity.

Cryptographic vs traditional notarization

Traditional notary
  • Human witness required
  • Physical presence or video call
  • Jurisdiction-dependent
  • Paper document
  • Manual verification
CertifiedData notary
  • Cryptographic proof — no human witness
  • API or platform — fully automated
  • Globally verifiable
  • Machine-readable JSON certificate
  • Independent verification in seconds
